Description: An Article 4 Direction is a legal measure used in the UK under the Town and Country Planning Act that allows local authorities to withdraw or restrict permitted development rights for specific properties or areas.
This means that certain changes to properties that would normally not require planning permission now do require it, allowing councils to maintain control over developments. The purpose of these directions is often to protect the character of conservation areas or to limit the number of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in specific locations.
