Description: The purpose of this map is to display data from the census of 1911. This is the first time a digital representation of District Electoral Divisions (DEDs) is publicly available for 1911. DEDs are a level of land classification from 1911, equivalent to today’s Electoral Divisions (EDs). Please note that this map is a digital representation of the 1911 DEDs and it is for display purposes only. Legal boundaries past or present cannot and should not be inferred from this map. The sources for this map are based on information provided by OSI and OSM. These include feature layers and physical maps which have been amended by the CSO using ArcGIS Pro. These amendments incorporated the 6 counties with the rest of Ireland and addressed anomalies in the geographical data. This involved a process to enable data linkage between tabular data recovered and indicative areas. There were 3673 DEDs reported in the 1911 census for the Island of Ireland. A special thanks to the open source OpenStreetMaps (OSM) for providing data for Northern Ireland, and also to Mike Murphy at UCC who provided a map of Ireland at DED level that we could use to reference boundaries. This map is now scanned and available as a pdf from the CSO.
